New Issue of Research Digest Now Available
We're excited to announce that the newest issue of Research Digest
is now available on the President's Challenge website. "Effective Education and Development of Youth Sport Coaches" takes a look at coaching at a youth
level – what it means to coach, coaching effectiveness, importance of professional training and education, and the overall influence that coaches have on
"Because the most powerful learning for coaches comes from "doing" and reflecting on those coaching experiences, as well as interacting with peers in
specific contexts, researchers have emphasized the need to reflect on practice and to examine the social networks coaches learn within."
About Research Digest
The Research Digest is a quarterly publication from the President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition that synthesizes scientific knowledge to
present a balanced, research–to–practice analysis on a range of topics including aspects of sports, physical activity and fitness, physical education,
nutrition, and dietetics research.
The publication aims to address topics of current relevance to physical educators, sports coaches, registered dieticians, sports medicine and public health
practitioners, physicians, and students.

The President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN) is a council made up of a variety of fitness and health advocates appointed by the
President that engages, educates and empowers all Americans to adopt a healthy lifestyle. The PCFSN has two annual awards to recognize individuals and
organizations that are committed to promoting fitness, sports and nutrition across the country and in the community:
Lifetime Achievement Award
: Honors individuals whose careers have greatly contributed to the advancement or promotion of physical activity, sport and nutrition nationwide. To submit

Presidential Youth Fitness Program Now Offers Comprehensive In–Person Training
In an effort to meet various learning styles, the Presidential Youth Fitness Program (PYFP) is now offering the
Success with the Presidential Youth Fitness Program through in–person training to mirror its virtual sister. Developed by the American Alliance
for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), the training covers all of the foundational elements that will help teachers successfully implement
PYFP in their schools. Topics include: An introduction to PYFP; integrating health related fitness education into quality physical education; assessing
health related–fitness; an introduction to motivational recognition; and communication strategies for physical education teachers. It's a great mix of
hands–on and didactic learning. Upon completion, participants will be enrolled in an online learning community, which allows them to connect with other
teachers, who are implementing PYFP and also fosters continued professional development long after the training has ended.

25 Trainings Available!
The Essentials of the Presidential Youth Fitness Program in–person training may be coming to a city near you! Thanks to the generous support of
the General Mills Foundation, AAHPERD will be providing 25 trainings for free at select locations across the country. In order to qualify, a group of 30
physical education teachers must be assembled. While the trainings are free (no registration fee required), teachers will not be provided a stipend or

2014 Is Quickly Approaching – Enhance Physical Education with the Presidential Youth Fitness Program
Teachers – Propel your physical education program and get your students on the fast track to lifelong physical activity in 2014 and beyond! The
Presidential Youth Fitness Program is providing a funding opportunity, with the generous support from the General Mills Foundation, to receive supplemental
program resources to enhance physical education in your school and / or district.
Applications to receive supplemental resources for the Presidential Youth Fitness Program will be accepted online (only) from January 1 – January 31, 2014!

Funding will cover selected schools through 2014–2015 and the following two school years. This funding will be open to all public and private schools that
