Vegetarians, Vegans, and Others with Dietary Restrictions

The President’s Challenge is open to all people—including those with dietary restrictions. The PALA+ healthy eating goals are flexible so you can earn your award in a way that fits your lifestyle.

Vegetarians and Vegans

To earn your award, you only need to select and complete six of the eight healthy eating goals. The following six goals may qualify for vegans and vegetarians:

  • Make half your plate fruits and vegetables.
  • Make half the grains you eat whole grains.
  • Drink water instead of sugary drinks.
  • Choose lean sources of protein. (Beans, peas, nuts, and seeds count and are encouraged. Some vegetarians may also benefit by including egg whites as a lean source of protein.)
  • Compare sodium in foods like soup and frozen meals and choose foods with less sodium.
  • Eat smaller portions.

In addition, some vegetarians may select from the other two goals:

  • Choose fat-free or low-fat (1%) milk, yogurt, or cheese (soy beverages, such as soymilk, count).
  • Eat some seafood.
Participants with Other Dietary Restrictions

PALA+ is for you, too. Just choose goals that are within your dietary requirements. There are eight goals to choose from, and you only need to complete six of them.

Consult with your health care provider if you have questions regarding your ability to complete one or more of the healthy eating goals.
