ABC Yoga for Kids

ABC Yoga for Kids

The mission of ABC Yoga for Kids is to educate and empower children across the nation and around the world to practice yoga in order to make better choices for keeping their bodies healthy, both mentally and physically. I have practiced yoga for over 30 years, and am the author of the best-selling and multiple award-winning book The ABCs of Yoga for Kids, which has sold over 100,000 copies worldwide. Many schools nationwide are incorporating The ABCs of Yoga for Kids into their school curriculum. For the past 10 years I have taught yoga to children, helping thousands of kids develop a healthy attitude towards their body. I also speak at numerous libraries, schools, bookstores, yoga studios, conferences, and childcare resource centers. Yoga nourishes the mind, body, and spirit and paves the way for a life-long tradition of health and fitness. Any activity for young children is important, considering the nation, including our youth, is under siege by obesity, stress, and diseases like diabetes that stem from poor diet and lack of exercise. It is the goal of ABC Yoga for Kids to create good habits and a foundation for well-being for the kids of our future generation through the engaging practice of yoga.

Basno

Basno

Objects that recognize our achievements and skills are some of our most cherished belongings. They commemorate rewarding experiences; they are perfect for moments of personal reflection or sharing memories with others. As we shape our presence online, and as fewer interactions take place at our homes or in our offices, our physical goods are losing relevance -- left unseen to gather dust. Free to own and store, readily deployable across profiles personal and professional, the digital medal, the digital trophy, the digital certificate will fill this need going forward and with enhanced effect. Communities formerly unconnected will come together around common ownership. Awards will become more than just something to hang around your neck, instead unlocking exclusive introductions and offerings.

To institutions, organizers and administrators charged with distributing prizes and certifications, digital objects serve to enhance, not just expand, the presence of your brand across the social web. They preserve the prestige and exclusivity of a given distinction. And that's what is important.

Boy Scouts of America

Boy Scouts of America

The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.  The mission is accomplished through three youth programs; Cub Scouts (boys age 7-10), Boy Scouts (boys age 11 -18), and Venturers (boys and girls age 14-21). The Boy Scouts of America has 298 councils across the United States, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Far East, and Germany. (Far East and Germany serve American youth who live abroad) who deliver the Scouting program to youth in their community.

Promoting healthy living has always been a very high priority for the entire organization. So much so, in fact, that last year BSA officially introduced a healthy living initiative, which seeks to make sure Scouts and all young people are healthy in mind, body, and spirit. The initiative grew out of a shared concern about national trends of shorter life expectancy for our young people. The partnership with the President’s Challenge program to promote the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA) will make sure that BSA is constantly working to engage, educate, and empower youth to adopt a healthy lifestyle that includes regular physical activity and good nutrition.

Center for Science in the Public Interest

The Center for Science in the Public Interest is a nonprofit health advocacy organization that focuses on nutrition, food safety, and sound science.  Best known for its hard-hitting studies on the calories and fat in restaurant meals, it lobbied for passage of the law requiring Nutrition Facts labels on packaged foods.  Its award-winning newsletter, Nutrition Action Healthletter, with some 850,000 subscribers in the United States and Canada, is the largest-circulation health newsletter in North America.

Founded by executive director Michael Jacobson, Ph.D., and two other scientists, CSPI has long sought to educate the public, advocate government policies that are consistent with scientific evidence on health and environmental issues, and counter industry’s powerful influence on public opinion and public policies.  In recent years CSPI has waged successful campaigns to pass landmark food safety legislation, and legislation getting junk food out of schools and requiring calorie counts on chain restaurant menus.

Columbia Disc Golf Boosters

Columbia Disc Golf Boosters

The primary purpose of the Columbia Disc Golf Boosters is to abolish the economic restrictions of traditional golf. We believe that golf offers many life skills, values and health benefits that cannot be simultaneously found in other healthy activities. Moreover, as the co-founder of this group, and an avid traditional golfer, I know how to bridge the gap between golfing with a ball and golfing with a disc. Finally, and most importantly, I would like to aid public school curriculum writers in developing a safe and fun way to teach disc golf and translate the skills onto one or more of the 5,000 + free to play courses in our great country. In short, the positive gains that our schools can have through golf are simply too beneficial to isolate golf as either a game with a projectile ball, or with a projectile disc. Golf is actually golf. The areas refereed to as "through the green" can literally look identical to the untrained eye. Moreover, the equipment needed for disc golf is unbelievable cheap when compared to traditional golf; additionally there are no greens fees thanks to outstanding efforts by local parks and recreation departments across the country. *and there are no golf carts! So you have to walk - which involves an average of 6,064 steps (http://www.pdga.com/a-good-walk-defined)

Conkey Cruisers

Conkey Cruisers

Conkey Cruisers is a grass root neighborhood bicycling program, inspired by Theresa Lou Bowick, a Registered Nurse who lives near Conkey Avenue. While out running one day she encountered a young boy, who yelled out to her, “Hey Lady, are you on probation?”  It appeared that the young boy thought she was running from the Police. As she continued her run, she stopped to chat with some neighbors, when another man approached the group.  The man pointed at Theresa and said, to the group, “Don’t talk to her she is the Police!” Theresa exclaimed that she was a Nurse, not the Police. However, the man was not convinced. He boldly stated to the group, “She is the Police, because nobody exercises in this neighborhood!”

Disturbed by these encounters, which she deemed a call to action, Theresa was determined to change the negative perception of exercise in her neighborhood. She developed the Conkey Cruisers Bicycling-to-Better-Health Voyage, in hopes that Neighbors will inspire Neighbors to stay active, make healthy food choices, decrease obesity rates, and create a positive image of their neighborhood. Theresa reached out to her neighbors, local businesses, bicycle experts, neighborhood group leaders, and City of Rochester Officials for support.

As Conkey Cruisers was coming into fruition, the final construction phases of the El Camino Trail were being completed.  The El Camino Trail is a 2.7 million dollar community investment designed to promote nature, hiking and biking in Northeast Rochester. As luck would have it, the trail runs along Conkey Avenue, providing a perfect route for The Conkey Cruisers Bicycling- to-Better-Health Voyage. Community Leaders are excited to have the program use the El Camino Trail.

The Conkey Cruiser’s inaugural ride is scheduled for July 7, 2012 at 5:30pm. Theresa believes, “It takes a village to be a village”, meaning we all share the responsibility of making our neighborhoods safe and healthy.

Falcons Youth and Family Services

Falcons Youth and Family Services

Mission

To empower at risk youth to excel in life through: educational services, health/nutritional awareness, physical activities, social responsibility, cultural appreciation and long term mentoring; further more to rebuild youth and families by repairing the damage done by social messages that does not teach or validate personal and or social responsibility.

About Us

Our initial goal was to offer affordable football and cheer for youth in South Los Angeles. However, we quickly realized the needs of the children were far greater than what a normal sports program could deliver, our youth needed more intensive services.   Several challenges face our youth: poor academics, high school dropout, gang violence, drug use, lack of social responsibility, character issues, childhood obesity and overall sense of hopelessness, helplessness and despair.  In the spring of 2006, we became a community based organization to use the social capitol of sports and deliver year round services to youth and families.

Roller Skating Association International

Roller Skating Association International

The Roller Skating Association International (RSA) is holding their second annual Skate A Million Miles event to promote a healthy lifestyle. The event will focus on the health benefits of roller skating.

In the spring, skaters across the country were asked to register for the event at their local skating center. 10,000 skaters, skating at least five times throughout the event, is what is needed to help the RSA get to the overall goal of one million miles skated.

Roller skating is also a unique way to achieve health benefits while having fun. The average person can burn 350 calories by skating at a rate of 6 miles per hour. This number increases to 600 calories if the person averages 10 miles within the hour. This is the basic equivalent of calories burned in jogging. Roller skating is also recommended by the American Heart Association as an aerobic fitness sport.

The dates of Skate A Million Miles coincide with the National President’s Challenge so participants can log their time spent roller skating as one of their activities in working to achieve the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA).

Skate Pass

In 2006, Skate Pass became the first in-school skateboarding program to be approved for physical education. Making history for skateboarding and PE, Skate Pass has been taught by public and private schools, recreation centers, Boys & Girls Clubs, the YMCA, the US Army, and President Clinton’s Healthy Schools Program in more than 30 states, Canada, Singapore, the Dominican Republic, and Germany.

Skate Pass is part of the “New PE,” which provides individual, non-competitive activities so that all students will enjoy PE, not just athletes. Due to skateboarding’s popularity with the youth, Skate Pass has also been embraced as an important ally in the fight against childhood obesity. Skateboarding is a non-competitive, lifelong activity that requires balance, sustained aerobic activity, core strength, focus, eye/foot coordination, and spatial awareness… and it’s really fun!

The Skate Pass program is a proven system for teaching first timers the fundamental skills and etiquette of skateboarding. The program emphasizes safety and very basic skills in a beginning curriculum and offers continued instruction in intermediate and advanced curriculums. The Skate Pass skateboard is an indoor/outdoor custom gym board designed to protect wood floors, tile, and synthetic surfaces. The board works just as well on outdoor surfaces such as concrete, asphalt, and all ramp surfaces.

The program is failsafe against the most unbalanced participant. With thousands of students (K-12) and teachers (ages 24 - 70) having gone through the beginning curriculum, there has never been a participant who was unable to do it. Skate Pass builds confidence and belief in one's self after the first session.

The Skate Pass lesson plans are easy to facilitate for any teacher, and all levels of skill can participate simultaneously in a classroom environment.

Spirit of Innovation Challenge

Spirit of Innovation Challenge

The Spirit of Innovation Challenge gives teachers an exciting and dynamic way to teach STEM; to go beyond the textbook and help students truly understand how what they are learning can be applied to something with large-scale social impact. The annual competition challenges high school students to use science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills to develop commercially viable, technology-based products that address real-world challenges.

The Spirit of Innovation Challenge is an open platform competition, free and available to students from all socioeconomic levels. Student teams are asked to conceptualize an innovative product that addresses one of three categories: Aerospace Exploration, Clean Energy, and Health and Nutrition. Students conduct research to determine their product’s potential market impact and develop a business plan. We introduce student teams to new and possibly unconsidered career paths by pairing them with world-class scientists, engineers, academics and business leaders who mentor the students and help bring their ideas to reality. This flagship program of the Conrad Foundation is the only incentivized learning program to combine STEM education with innovation and entrepreneurship.

The Trust for Public Land

The Trust for Public Land

The Trust for Public Land works to protect the places people care about and to create close-to-home parks-particularly in and near cities, where 85 percent of Americans live. Our goal is to ensure that every child has easy access to a safe place to play in nature. We also conserve working farms, ranches, and forests; lands of historical and cultural importance; rivers, streams, coasts, and watersheds; and other special places where people can experience nature close at hand. The Trust for Public Land was founded to conserve land for people to enjoy as parks, gardens, and other natural places, and we're still the only large conservation organization focused on this goal. Today, nearly ten million Americans live within a ten-minute walk of a park or natural area we've protected. We're working toward a day when everyone has easy access to a safe, green place to play. Parks support the health and well-being of communities. The Trust for Public Land is the go-to organization for communities wanting to protect special places and create close-to-home parks, playgrounds, greenways, and trails, all of which promote exercise and make it easier for people to make healthy lifestyle choices. The Trust for Public Land's Fitness Zone® Program provides free outdoor fitness equipment in local parks-often in neighborhoods where gym memberships are too pricey to be practical. With your support, we're empowering communities with an innovative new resource in the fight against obesity.

Together-Counts

Together Counts

Together Counts is a nationwide program we're sponsoring to inspire active and healthy living. The idea is to get families and community members — starting with you — to take a simple pledge:

Eat at least 1 meal and do at least 1 activity together every week.

The goal is to find a balance between the calories we consume and those we burn, to strike this balance regularly, and to have some fun. This way, getting more active and healthy becomes easy — easy as a dinner date followed by a walk with the people you care about most.

Together Counts is about to launch across the country, but it starts here, with us.
