Before heading out on your first ride, there are a few basics you should know. Here's a quick checklist to help keep you rolling safely.
1. Inspect your bike.
Take a few minutes to make sure your bike is in good working condition - including inflating the tires, inspecting the tread and brake pads for wear, and checking for loose or broken parts. Stopping by a bike shop for an annual tune-up is a good idea, as well.
2. Wear a helmet.
Even if you're not planning on going very far, you should always wear a helmet whenever you ride. Make sure your helmet fits snugly on top of your head, not tipped back.
3. Be seen.
If you're going to ride in low-visibility conditions, use lights and reflective clothing so motorists can see you coming. A good headlight helps you see where you're going, as well. Make sure you know and follow the laws in your area about riding at night.
4. Be prepared.
Breakdowns are bound to happen from time to time. So make sure you have the tools and the know-how to deal with any mechanical emergencies. Check with your local bike shop for maintenance classes.
5. Practice riding.
An essential part of safe riding is controlling your bike. You should practice your bike handling skills (such as cornering and braking) until you feel comfortable.
6. Obey traffic laws.
Always ride to the right on streets and bike paths. Use hand signals to indicate lane changes and turns. At intersections, ride in the furthest right lane that goes in your direction.
7. Keep your head up.
You should always be alert when riding, constantly scanning for upcoming obstacles or traffic.
8. Respect others.
Whether you're riding on roads, trails or bike paths, be courteous to others around you. Obey speed limits and respect slower riders.
9. Think ahead.
The last thing you want on a ride is to become dehydrated or to run out of energy. So drink before you're thirsty and eat before you're hungry.
