Greetings from the office of the President's Challenge Physical Activity and Fitness Awards Program! You have received the October 2008 issue of Fitness is Fun, the official email distribution of the President's Challenge. These monthly emails will keep you updated on our programs, activities of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (PCPFS) and other current information pertaining to health and fitness.

PCPFS NEWS:

New Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans
On October 7, 2008 the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HSS) announced the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. These guidelines provide comprehensive science-based guidance in a 60+ page document based on the 683-page report submitted by the advisory committee. The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans are designed so that people can customize them to fit their lifestyle and are able to include activities that they enjoy. These guidelines contain examples of activities for different age groups and those with special considerations.

Health benefits of physical activity occur for children and adolescents, young and middle-aged adults, older adults, and those in every studied racial and ethnic group. With regular physical activity, children and adolescents are able to improve their cardio and muscular fitness, along with bone health, and can also reduce symptoms of depression. Adults, younger and older, lower the risk of coronary disease, stroke, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and colon and breast cancer and can help prevent falls and reduce depression. Regular physical activity can also benefit older adults by allowing them to enjoy better thinking ability, and it can also help with arthritis or other rheumatic conditions affecting the joints by improving pain management, function, and quality of life.

Some type of physical activity is better than no type of physical activity. The more physically active you are, the more benefits you will be able to reap. For most health outcomes, additional benefits occur as the amount of physical activity increases through higher intensity levels, greater frequency, and/or longer duration. But remember to be safe as well as active. These Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans include tips for safe physical activity. An example would be choosing activities that are appropriate for current fitness level and health goals. Another example would be to increase physical activity gradually over time to meet those guidelines or health goals. Also remember to use appropriate gear and sports equipment and look for safe environments.

ADULT FITNESS TEST
The PCPFS recently launched an online Adult Fitness Test at Results Gym on Capitol Hill. Many baby boomers remember taking the youth fitness test in elementary school, and now have a chance to see how they score as adults! The activities featured on the adult fitness test provide you with an estimate of your level of aerobic fitness, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and body composition. The results of each test provide you with a measure from which you can track your progress in each area as you become more physically active. Heads Up: Concussion in Youth Sports – FREE Tool Kit
Attention youth sport coaches! Order your FREE "Heads Up" Concussions Tool Kits! As many as 3.8 million sports-and recreation-related concussions are estimated to occur in the United States each year. A concussion is a brain injury caused by a bump or blow to the head that can change the way your brain normally works. Even what seems to be a mild bump or blow to the head can be serious. As a coach or youth sports administrator, you play a vital role in sharing this information with athletes and parents. PCPFS Physical Activity & Fitness Research Digest
The PCPFS Fitness Research Digest is published quarterly by the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. The most recent issue focuses on Promoting Physical Activity Using Technology. Grants Information:

EPA Grants for Healthy Communities and Active Aging
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency plans to award in early 2009, two grants for $100,000 each to train older adults to be environmental leaders and demonstrate how greenways and sustainable streets can improve the environment, human health and the quality of life for persons of all ages. Building Healthy Communities for Active Aging Training and Demonstration Projects must include a strategy that either 1) trains older adults to be environmental leaders on local planning decisions that affect their community's built environment; or 2) demonstrates how greenways and sustainable streets can improve the quality of life for persons of all ages while improving environmental quality.

Letters of intent are encouraged by October 24, 2008.

Proposals must be submitted by November 21, 2008.

National Gardening Association and Home Depot Announce 2009 Youth Garden Grants Program
Deadline for Applications: November 1, 2008.
The Youth Garden Grants program has helped more than 1.3 million youngsters reap rewards and vital life lessons from working in gardens and habitats. NGA awards Youth Garden Grants to schools and community organizations with child-centered garden programs. In evaluating grant applications, priority will be given to programs that emphasize one or more of these elements: educational focus or curricular/program integration; nutrition or plant-to-food connections; environmental awareness/education; entrepreneurship; social aspects of gardening such as leadership development, team building, community support, or service-learning. Schools, youth groups, community centers, camps, clubs, treatment facilities, and intergenerational groups throughout the United States are eligible. Applicants must plan to garden with at least 15 children between the ages of 3 and 18 years. Previous Youth Garden Grant winners who wish to reapply may do so, but must wait one year (e.g., if you won in 2008, you can apply again in 2010) and have significantly expanded their garden programs. New President’s Challenge Information

The new President’s Challenge brochure is now available. A copy of this booklet is currently being sent to every health and physical education teacher in the US. Presidential Emblem (2008) Emblems with year are here!

For the first time ever the President's Challenge is offering Presidential, National and Participant Physical Fitness Award emblems with a year on them. These emblems are a great way for students and parents to commemorate the year in which they earned an award. PC phasing out #1-12 Presidential Emblems

With the addition of Presidential Emblems with a year on them the President's Challenge has begun to phase out the numbered Presidential Physical Fitness Award emblems (#1-12). We suggest stocking up now if you would like to continue handing these out. Once they are gone, they're gone! Sit & Reach Box Sit and Reach Boxes

Did you ever wonder where you could get a Sit and Reach box for testing your students’ flexibility? Look no further. The President’s Challenge has them available now. These flexibility testers are easy to assemble and feature the President’s Challenge logo on each side. Scorepads Physical Fitness Score Pads

You asked for it, you got it. We now have score pads available that will make it easy to write down your students’ scores. Tear them off and give them to the students or keep them on the pad to take back to your office. There is even a section to write some notes. SPECIAL FEATURE: Team BSS

Team BSS is a group of blind and visually impaired walkers and runners, who work out as a team four times a week. There are sighted guides who volunteer to walk or run with the blind or visually impaired individuals. Currently there are 28 people on the team.

One of the outstanding members of Team BSS is Jorge Llanes, who lost his vision due to diabetes. Llanes has not let that challenge stop him though. In spite of severe difficulties that he has with his feet, he is a dedicated member of the team. Llanes recently received a medal for placing 2nd in a Temecula, CA 5k race.

Another Team BSS member is Alicia Campos, who is 27-years-old and lost her vision due to Retinitis Pigmentosa when she was only eight years old. Campos participates in team events with her guide dog Kansas.

There is also a family that is participating together, Bruce and Sharon Benafield along with their 16-year-old daughter Andrea. Both Bruce and Sharon are completely blind, Bruce completed a 10k in Temecula while Sharon completed the 5k race.

Allison Alejo, of Team BSS, said that “What is most amazing about our team is everyone’s dedication to being active and healthy. Sometimes when people think of athletes what comes to mind is the rock hard bodies of an ironman. When we think of an athlete we think of the people who have to take a public bus for two hours just to make it to the start line.”

I love to walk my dog and see him get excited over the leaves falling in front of him. I enjoy the brisk air (it keeps me from feeling so gross if I sweat).

I like to head to the u-pick apple farm and pick my own apples. We also wander through the pumpkin patch and find a pumpkin for our Halloween jack o' lantern. Lugging all our goodies home is a good aerobic workout!

My favorite activity in autumn which allows me to get outdoors and enjoy the fall season is raking leaves. Ironically enough, this is the only time of the year you will ever see me doing yard work. I can't stand it otherwise. Raking leaves not only allows me to exert some energy and get some much needed exercise, but it also gives me a chance to spend quality time with my family. My daughter is 19 months old right now and I can't wait for her to experience the fun of jumping into a big bushy pile of leaves. Before she was born my husband and I shared in the fun with our 2 chocolate labs. They too loved jumping and running through the leaves.

In the fall I love to take my family to a Corn Maze, we all walk through and laugh as we get lost and try to find our way out. We put in a lot of walking and laughing on a cool fall day. The one we go to also has a hay ride after you get out that goes around the maze. I also enjoy raking leaves and letting the kids jump in them.
