DIRECTOR OF PRESIDENT'S CHALLENGE PASSES AWAY
It is with deepest regret that the President's Challenge announces the passing of our Director, Dr. Wynn F. Updyke. Dr. Updyke was instrumental in working with the Amateur Athletic Union to bring the President's Challenge program to Indiana University in 1988. He has served as the only Director of our program since. During his tenure the President's Challenge program has touched the lives of over 60 million youth. He was a friend, colleague and mentor to all who knew him. His compassion for youth fitness and his humble leadership style will be greatly missed by our program. However, in honor of him we will continue to uphold the high level of service to our users that he has instilled in our organization. Please call the President's Challenge office at 800-258-8146 if you have any questions.

2002-03 PRESIDENT'S CHALLENGE POSTER RECEIVES ADDY AWARD
Sponsored by the American Advertising Foundation (AAF), the ADDY Awards honor excellence and creativity within the advertising industry. The ADDY Awards are the nation's largest advertising competition with over 60,000 entries submitted each year. Those who have won at the national level must have first won at the local and regional levels before being considered for national status. The 2002 President's Challenge poster was designed by the Ion Design Company and can be viewed and purchased at the President's Challenge website http://www.PresidentsChallenge.org. STEP WITH IT
Step With It…a program developed and sponsored by Coca Cola in partnership with the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (http://www.naspe.org) and the President's Challenge…is a new fitness program designed to help increase the daily physical activity of students across the nation. This simple program allows students to earn the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA) while having fun at the same time just by being active. For more information on this program visit http://www2.coca-cola.com/ourcompany/hal_active_step.html or contact the program administrator Lauri Chotiner by calling 678-701-0369.
RECOMMENDATION: NO MORE THAN10% OF CALORIES FROM SUGAR
A recent report commissioned by the World Health Organization and the Food Agriculture Organization recommends that no more than 10% of daily calories come from added sugar not found naturally in foods. Foods containing natural sugar include honey, syrups and some fruit juices. The panel of 30 international experts concluded that the current United States governmental allowance of 25% of calories from sugar significantly contributes to the global epidemic of obesity-related diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. Food industry representatives dispute these findings by saying that more exercise is the key to combating obesity and obesity-related diseases. To read more on this new recommendation and the arguments for and against it, please visit http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2003-03-02-world-sugar_x.htm

STUDY SUGGESTS SCHOOLS LACKING IN EXERCISE PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN
Findings from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Study of Early Child and Youth development third graders, has found that these children are not receiving the 30-60 minutes per week of vigorous activity recommended by the United States Department of Health and Human Services (http://www.hhs.gov). On average, these children received 25 minutes or less of vigorous activity per week. The study evaluated a sample of third grade children and the physical education classes in which they participated. To read more about this study and the specific evaluation categories in which the conclusions were based upon, please visit the NICHD website at http://www.nichd.nih.gov.
